Santa Monica prison in Lima, Peru, holds one of the largest number of foreigners facing charges or sentences for drug trafficking. The so-called drug mules, bearing nationalities from all over the world, are often arrested at Lima´s international airport attempting to leave the country with several kilos of pure cocaine hidden in their bodies or luggage. If they succeed they will be paid between US$ 3,000 and US$ 5,000 per trip. The prison´s full capacity is 450 inmates, nevertheless the population is usually three times more, and around 80% of the inmates face drug trafficking charges or sentences.
